In honor of the final season of American Idol

Long ago–early in the days of “American Idol”–I wrote an essay about watching it. It’s in my 2015 book of essays, Like A Song, but it was first published in one of my favorite literary magazines, River Teeth: A Journal of Nonfiction Narrative. And here it is, in its entirety, in honor of the final season of the show (which, I confess, I hadn’t watched since my daughter outgrew it, many seasons ago–but I’m watching it now, because how can I not? It’s the end of an era).
